Samsung Rex 60 - Expert Reviews

Samsung has been in the limelight for their prolific flagship devices that compete with the best in the world. The Samsung Galaxy S series has a huge range of highest selling smartphones in the history, which have given Apple more than a run for their money. But one has to remember that Samsung did not start by such heavyweight gadgets, in fact were a regular in the budget device segment. The company has come a long way since then and are now the largest market share holder in the world but there has also been a rise in the number of tier2 companies who have grabbed hold of the lower segment of the market. The lower segment is as profitable as the flagship segment if not more especially in a country like India, which is a developing economy. Therefore Samsung starts customizing their products for the Indian consumers and hence we have products like Samsung Rex 60. The device has a trifling screen of 2.8 inches that gives a resolution of 240 by 320 pixels, which the bare minimum that one can get in this department.

Taking the dimensions into consideration, Samsung Rex 60 has a length of 101.8mm, a breadth of 55mm and a height of 12.2mm. The device has the standard Samsung-ish look with round edges. Like most of the low-end budget devices, Samsung Rex 60 also supports the dual-SIM facility, which means that the user can use two SIM cards in a single device thus eliminating the need to keep two devices. The chaste 1.3 megapixels camera really does not produce anything special that can exceed the abilities of its pixel strength. Images are alright and the same thing applies to the video recordings. Moving on to the storage capacity, the device has a paltry 30MB internal memory that would soon run out when the user starts to keep a heavy collection of data like mp3 songs or videos.

To solve that problem, the device is aided by the microSD card slot that can accommodate an external memory of up to 16GB. If used to its full retention the user can keep a mammoth amount of data including songs, games, images and videos. There is a default browser in the device that can be used for the Internet usage while GPRS and EDGE facilities are further available to help. There is no Wi-Fi, which is kind of a drawback but the multimedia features are well sought after with a music player and a video player. There is also a FM radio which can be used to access the radio stations. The device advocated by the standard lithium-ion battery of 1,000mAh, which provides a humongous talk time of up to 15 hours. This is one trait in the Samsung devices, which apart from the brand value gives them an edge over others.

Operating system and UI

Samsung Rex 60 has a 2.8-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen that gives a meager resolution of up to 240 by 320 pixels. The device is low end so it was never meant to be high on bright and luminous display quality but the pixel density is still respectable with 143ppi.

Other Features

Samsung Rex 60 renders a music player and a video player to look after the entertainment aspect with the former giving access to the popular songs and the latter videos. The music player is compatible with the formats mp3 and eAAC+ while the video can be played in the formats of mp4 and H.263. The device is compatible with a 3.5mm jack as far as the earphones are concerned.

Samsung Rex 60 comes with a meek 1.3 megapixels camera which permits the user to click pictures at a resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels. Video recording can be made but with limited quality.

GPRS, EDGE and a default built-in browser is all that the Samsung Rex 60 provides the user for accessing the web. The user can visit web sites like Facebook, Twitter or access mails. Data of desired nature can be downloaded but the device is neither Android powered nor compatible with the 3GB technology so the web speed would not be the quickest.

A 30MB internal memory would simply not be enough for the user to store data on a large scale. The microSD card slot has the potential to elongate the external memory up to 16GB. Though a few extra bucks would be required, it would help the user keep a better collection of data in terms of size. The internal memory still on its own can let the user store up to 2000 contacts.

Other Features

Samsung Rex 60 is low on games and apps as it is not an Android smartphone but the ones offered are good enough to keep the user engaged and entertained for a while. This is certainly not a gaming device and the user would find it hard to find more downloading options.

Samsung Rex 60 is upheld by the standard lithium-ion battery of 1,000mAh that provides a ample amount of talk time of up to 15 hours.

Samsung Rex 60 is not short on data connectivity features as it includes the GPRS and EDGE along with WAP browser for Internet usage while Bluetooth and USB port are also provided for data exchange with other compatible devices.

Other Features

Samsung Rex 60 when compared to Nokia Asha 306 has a smaller screen size with the former featuring a 2.8-inch display as compared to 3 inches from the latter. Both the devices are touchscreen but Nokia Asha 306 is faster as far as response time is concerned. The camera is more powerful with Nokia Asha 306 in terms of pixels. The device has a 2 megapixels primary shutter as compared to the Samsung Rex 60 1.3 megapixels camera. The battery backup is slightly more with Nokia Asha 306 as well with 1,110mAh as compared to Samsung Rex 60 1,000mAh but the talk time offered is more with the latter as compared to the former.

Other Features

25th February 2013: Samsung India launched a low-budget simple feature phone, Rex 60, with touchscreen capability. The handset has a 2.8-inch display that shows a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels with a pixel density of 143ppi. The primary camera is 1.3 megapixels that captures images as well as records VGA videos. The external memory can be expanded up to 16GB using a microSD card, whereas the internal memory of 30MB is sufficient to store up to 1,000 phonebook entires and all the call records. Blessed with few of the necessary sensors like Proximity sensor, the phone draws power from a 1,000mAh battery that offers a decent talk and standby time.

• 2.8-inch TFT touhscreen
• 1,000mAh standard lithium-ion battery
• 1.3 megapixels primary camera
• Music player + video player
